Doris Berteau, age 96, of Neillsville, WI died Thursday, April 6, 2017 in her residence at the Neillsville Retirement Community.Doris Fay Berteau was born in 1920 in Newark, N.J. to Frank and Colette Fay. Shortly thereafter, her family moved back to France where she lived until she was 15. At that time, she returned to the U.S. with her mother and grandmother. She attended high school in New York City until the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin where Doris graduated from Central High School. In 1942 she received her B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin. During the war, she worked for the Office of Censorship in Chicago, Miami and Washington. In 1948, Doris received her M.A. from the University of California Berkeley. That year, she married George Berteau with whom she spent 55 wonderful years. All of her professional life was spent teaching French in California and Wisconsin, including 25 years in the Racine Unified School District. In 1989, after George had retired from his law practice and Doris was no longer teaching, they moved to Neillsville where they became part of the community. Doris belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, the PEO Sisterhood and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing golf, playing bridge, reading and traveling.She is survived by one step-son, John of Sarasota, Florida, one cousin, Kathy Harris of Plantation, Florida, her dear friends, Lorraine and Bob Shaw and Joyce Baker along with many other friends.She was preceded in death by her husband, George.Doris's wishes were that there would be no formal funeral services.Online Condolences may be made at www.geschefh.com.
