Dr. Carroll N. Schield, formerly of Neillsville, passed away on Friday, Nov. 22 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.Carroll was born Nov. 21, 1917 in Neillsville, WI as the only child of Joseph and Alice Schield. He grew up in Neillsville and graduated high school in 1936. He started college at Drake University in Des Moines, IA on a basketball scholarship, but elected to head to dental school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI after a year, choosing profession over play. It was while in Dental School that he met, and eventually married his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Schield. Upon graduation from dental school, Carroll served in the US Army as a Medical Officer in Europe, Japan, and the Philippines. Upon his discharge, he and Betty moved back to Neillsville where he practiced dentistry from 1946 until 1984 and they raised a family of seven children. In mid 1980s they moved to Florida, returning each summer to the family Cottage in Hatfield, WI. Always active and fit, Carroll was an avid tennis player who played the game well into his late 80s. A private and quiet man, he was well respected both personally and professionally in his community. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2011 and is survived by his seven children; Patricia (Jay) Werth of Santa Rosa, Calif., Dr. Dan (Roberta) Schield of Neillsville, Wendy Smail of Boulder, Colo., Joseph Schield of Port Richey, Florida, Mary Alice Schield of Sonoma, Calif., Jim (Shawn) Schield of Arlington, Va., and David (Rebecca) Schield of Middleton; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville, WI at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, January 24, 2014. The Celebrant will be Rev. Joseph V. Varkey. Music will be provided by Ronald Resong, organist and St. Mary's Choir. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 24th at the Church.
