Chris Werdin, age 65, of Spencer, WI died Monday, February 6, 2023 at his residence on county road Y.
Chris Howard Werdin was born on June 18, 1957, in Stanley, WI the son of Howard and Mary Werdin. He attended grade school in Thorp, WI, until his family moved to Whitewater, WI. Chris graduated from Whitewater High School in 1975. Prior to graduation, Werdin joined the National Guard in Whitewater in 1974.
His basic training was at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. His advanced individual training was a at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
Chris worked as a heavy truck mechanic at first, but later was an auto body repairman.
In 1979, he was with the engineers at the Abbotsford National Guard location. In 1985, he attended the basic non-commissioned officers' course at the Wisconsin Military Academy and the advanced course at Camp Beauregard in Pineville, Louisiana. He was the first sergeant at the Wisconsin Military School.
Chris attended air assault school at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. In 1988, he took an instructor course and taught leadership for three years at the Wisconsin Military Academy. He served with the 2nd/128th infantry. He was a part of the Reforger exercise in Germany in 1986 and 1988. He also served at Fort Riley, Kansas; Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked on many additional duties.
He worked for more than 35 years as an auto body repairman. He had 21 years of active duty. He retired in 1996 as an E-8.
He has two children, Brent and Kristina, and seven grandchildren. He is a volunteer at the Neillsville Legion Steak Feed. He enjoys traveling, fishing and hunting.
A celebration of life will be held at the Neillsville American Legion at a later date.
