Eugene Simmons

Eugene Simmons, age 91, of Neillsville, WI, died Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the Riverside Assisted Living Facility in Neillsville.


Eugene Francis Simmons was born on June 27, 1933, in Omaha, NE the son of Curtis and Frances (Engle) Simmons. He attended high school in Omaha, and then served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Korea, during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned home and was united in marriage to Leona Lukowski on September 17, 1955. Once they were married, they moved to Neillsville to begin a new life with each other, sharing many happy times together.


Gene was employed at Hewitt Packaging, and Short's Fur Farm, and then raised veal calves for 35+ years. After retiring, Gene and Leona spent winters in Quartzite, AZ, and went on many excursions in the desert and surrounding areas. They did many crafts projects together, and attended craft shows in Arizona.


Along with crafts, Gene had many hobbies and interests including fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, flying and building and a maintaining a nice farmstead. He enjoyed traveling with Leona and good friends to many different places.


Gene had a close relationship with Donna and Bill Kroll, Leona's family in Omaha, along with extended family visiting them often in Nebraska, and vacationing with them. Leona's family would often make the trip to Neillsville to visit too. Along with family, Gene had many good friends including Kenny & Jean Goetz, and family, Bob & Florence Spiegel and family, and Tom & Bev Short. Eugene Spiegel was also a special friend to Gene.

A graveside service for Gene and Leona will be held at a later date.
